Until 1927 Cathoplics had to attend church in Luton. There was no catholic church in Dunstable. Early in 1927 the Catholics of the area got together and wrote tpthe Bishop of Northampton. lmmediately a house in regent Street was obtained as a Mass centre. In Navembet 1927 the site on which the present Church is built was purchased and in the houseon thhe site, two rooms were convertedd into an oratary i.e. a little chapel where Mass was said for the Catholics of the area.
In 1935 a Church was opened on the site at West Street. This Church now forms part of the Social Centre. Due to the growth at Dunstable this Church was not big e nough to accommodate the Catholics of the area and work was begun in 1961 on this present building. The foundation stone was laid on 29th April 1962 and the St, Mary’s Church was opened and blessed by the Right Reverend Leo T. Parker, Bishop of Northampton on 15th March 1964. The newspaper of the following week described it as a great day despite the snow.
An interesting fact is that the Church cost £100,000 to build and £60,000 had alreaady been raised by Parishioners.
